Update of my favorite little Hawthorn.

Hi, everybody,

This little tree is without any wire for a long time now and some of the new smaller branches are growing in the wrong direction and needs to be wired in to place or cut back! The finer ramification that fills out and shapes the outline of the separate foliage pads has more than doubled over this last year and so far I am happy with the lower 80% off the ramification, but the top section needs to thicken some more and fill out a lot more to make me really HAPPY!! 🙂 But they don’t grow much when they are settled in a pot like this one is, so that will take at least two more growing seasons! Maybe just in time for the next Noelanders Kifu trophy?! The result of the root techniques I did last year is still covered with cut paste and soil and seem to do all right?! But we will know after this winter when I will have a closer look at the roots, I will keep you informed. I hope that the finer roots have grown enough to allow me to cut off some major thick roots so that I am able to remove two big rocks from the root ball! Then I can put it in a more shallower and suitable pot than this one. Although more suitable, some people really like this pot it is in now! Tony Tickle who was here last weekend loved the pot and he is not the only one! What do you guy’s think?! Note the pot is dirty in these pictures and normally it has a nice dark patina! I find it somewhat too high or too heavy, but in the future when the silhouette is more full, well than it might look just right?!

MY VISIT TO THE “EDA UCHI KAI” BONSAI SHOW AND HOW I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY A BONSAI!

Hi, everybody,

Saturday a week ago I made the 2,5-hour drive to Diepenbeek in Belgium to visit the  “EDA UCHI KAI” Bonsai Club show. The show was staged in two buildings, one for the exhibition, lectures and refreshments and the other one, just a cross the road, for the traders and demonstrations. It would be the first time that I visit this Club’s annual Bonsai show and I had high expectations after seeing pictures off last years edition! Well, I was not disappointed at all, quite the opposite…I was blown away by some of the high-level Bonsai on display, but one tree really managed to take my breath away! And I found my self, still overwhelmed, coming back to see it all day long! My compliments go out to this (small )Club that organized this wonderful friendly show, I had a great time, meeting old friends from all over Europe and enjoying the fine trees on display! Well, don indeed!

Here are some amazing pictures from that “Masterpiece” Bonsai that blew me away and more than once! It’s a White Pine by Mario Komsta (PL) an artist that I highly respect! The pictures were made by my dear friend Roland Petek. This amazing tree and a few other high-class Bonsai were shown on the stage behind closed curtains to keep it dark! And the trees and company plants were lit by only one or two small bright spotlights, so they really stood out against the dark velvet backgrounds! It was like walking through a magical dark forest full of small super trees! But getting a good picture in this kind of set up was very difficult, so I am really happy that I can use Roland’s beautiful pictures! 🙂

I hope you enjoyed these pictures of this outstanding Bonsai as much as I do?! I think that this tree is the best traditional styled Pine I ever saw in real life, the open spaces, the rhythm, the maturity of trunk, bark and branches, the………well everything about it is like I always thought it could be! 🙂 And there were a few more of this calibre in this already great show!!! 🙂

So friends do make sure to visit the next edition of the “EDA UCHI KAI” Bonsai club show!

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.

THE WONDERFULL “BURRS” 2013 BONSAI EXPERIENCE PART III

Hi, everybody,

after a very hectic week, I want to show you some last pictures that I forgot to post in the earlier post about “Burrs” 2013, and I don’t want to forget anybody from who I have a nice picture off….?…. Bladie blabbla….it’s late I know! 🙂

Some more sing-along moments for all the people from all around Europe that were there! Unforgettable moments indeed! 🙂

BURRS 2013 087 org 500

Next is an interesting question that was asked by Chris over on the IBC Forum, it could be interesting for others too, so here we go:

Beautiful lines. I saw you drawing out the tree, do you come up with the design and then sketch, or do you play around with poss. designs while sketching, then deciding upon the final styling?

I answered with:

Here is the drawing that I made on the Saturday evening for Steward. He was working on another off his trees and his amazing (UK) Yamadori Pine stood beside him on the table, I asked him is it OK that I make a design option for your Pine? He said: yes, please! So I grabbed my sketchpad and started to draw the outlines of the tree and the beginning of the main branches that I was planning to use. When those outlines are more or less similar that the actual tree, well then I start to draw the rest of the main branches and than the smaller branches until they are about the length that feels or seems right! Then the bundles of needles are made quickly until the outline of each foliage pad has reached more or less the right outline that feels right. More needles are drawn until everything is more or less in balance to me…that’s it really?! I have found out that by drawing your design onto paper or pc is very helpful to check if it looks all right and possible. And by setting your image with your hands into a drawing you will always remember them! You have created a blueprint in your head with the use of your hands. In this case, the drawing also helps the student to see with his own eyes what you are seeing as a possible future for his tree! This makes it all clearer and easier to understand and helps them to make a well-thought decision about the future of their own trees! And it is a nice souvenir as well! Steward was very happy with the drawing….I was pleasantly surprised that next day he asked me if I please would help him to style his pine! That was a brave decision from him because for my intended design some major branches needed to be cut off or made into a Jin! So that puts a little bit of pressure onto your shoulders…but that feels nice!

Here is the drawing that I made for Steward.

And finally: how it all started! Early Saturday morning, organizer Tony Tickle introducing us the teachers to 36 ready to go Bonsai lovers! From left to right: Marcio Meruje (Portugal), Pavel Slovak (Czech Republic), Hans van Meer (The Netherlands, Holland), Will Baddeley (UK) and Last but not least Terry Foster (UK).

And before we knew it, it was all over again! I had a blast and it did me a ton off good to get there in the end! And who knows????

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.

THE WONDERFULL “BURRS” 2013 BONSAI EXPERIENCE PART II

Hi, everybody,

here are the promised pictures of this wonderful Bonsai weekend, a little later than planned, I am sorry! 🙂

Here are some pictures made by Andrew Campbell during the 2-day transformation of his Shohin Cuspidate (Japanese yew). I borrowed the pictures from him to show you what makes “BURRS” so unique?! He asked Marcio and me for advice and we discussed the possibility’s together and Andrew decided to go with what we suggested. Then we explained him witch steps he had to take and in what order. Cleaning up the tree removing everything unwanted, creating new Shari and Jins from two large branches that were removed and then wiring every branch on the tree! He was concentrated at work for two day’s, with a big grin on his face! On the second day, he asked me to more or less bring the branches into the desired position. While Marcio and Rob were giving advise when I asked if this or that was all right in their eyes?! In this way of harmoniously working together, without ego and willing to listen to each others opinion, makes for good Bonsai and friendships! Thanks Andrew for your trust in us, for your pictures and your Vodka!! 🙂

Below still a bit of a bush!

No thanks to you Andrew for trusting us and following up on our advice! It was a valuable little yew and it takes courage to cut away that much branches and foliage! And your trust was rewarded with a very promising little Shohin with pretty OPEN SPACES! Very Happy  And thanks for bringing that large bottle of Smirnoff and sorry that I finished it all on the Saturday Night!

Rob just came back with:

Well, I have seen your work so the trusting thing was no problem really.  As for the Smirnoff….I have never seen anyone drink vodka like that.  I can see that you commit yourself fully to everything you do lol.  I will remember to bring two bottles next time haha

RESTORING MY NEW BONSAI SCROLL.

Hi, everybody,

yesterday I restored my new scroll with the Bonsai painting. It had a nasty very visual scratch right over the base of Bonsai drawing that needed some touching up by me!

Below: (green arrow) Close up of the damaged surface on the roots of the Bonsai painting.

15-10-2013 scroll 002 Hans van Meer 600

Below: This nasty scratch was probably the reason why the eventual selling price stayed low and affordable for us, so if I could restore it myself, we would be very lucky indeed! Mixing several watercolours to get all the right shades off brown’s and black’s was quite a task, but fun to do! And I think that the final result is very satisfying and you would never know it was there……well all you do now! 🙂

15-10-2013 scroll 007 Hans van Meer 600

I am very happy with the end result and the scroll is already hanging on the living room wall again!

Only 4 more weeks to “BURRS” !!!! 🙂

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.

FINALY FOUND A SCROLL WITH A BONSAI DRAWING!

Hi, everybody,

two weeks ago, after years of surging the internet, I finally found a nice scroll with a Bonsai painted on it! Finding a nice scroll like this is one thing, trying to buy it for a reasonable price is another! We had to stay up until 4 in the morning when the bidding would end and where delighted when we were able to buy it within our budget! This is rare because scrolls with Bonsai on it are highly desired by many internet buyers, so we were extremely lucky to get this on!

It is painted on paper and measures: height 77,6 inch and width 16,8 and the end rollers are made of wood. The painting on the scroll depicts a white Pine Bonsai standing on a white and blue earth were drum. The drum itself is decorated with Prunes and Bamboo, bringing the 3 friends of winter (Pine, Prunes and Bamboo) together. It needs just a little restoration by me, but that will be no problem at all!

The scroll now hangs on the wall in our living room and it really lights up the room now the day’s get shorter and shorter while winter is creeping closer and closer!

scroll 1 Hans van Meer 700

Hope you like my new scroll just as much as I do?!

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.

DIRK’S (JUNIPER) FUN BONSAI DAY.

Hi, everybody.

last Thursday I had my Bonsai friend Dirk Mundorf from Germany over for our now traditional annual Bonsai fun day! When he arrived at 10 in the morning after his 3,5 hours drive we had a quick strong coffee and then we immediately started to work on the big Juniper he brought along with him. A few years ago we gave this tree it’s first styling in my garden and now it was time to give it it’s follow up styling. First, as always, the trunk and branches were cleaned with the help of steal and copper wire brushes. As soon as we started, the sun started shinning and it would do so all day long! 🙂

Below: While Dirk torched the place I was wiring the safe side of the tree! 🙂 The deadwood was not treated with Lime Sulphur, that will be donat Dirk’s home, we did not want to stink up his car! 4 hours in a car with the smell of fresh Lime Sulphur up your nose is too much for civilized people! 🙂

3-10-2013 Dirk's worshop 033 Hans van Meer 800

Below: Even though the whole top section is not wired and therefore can not be placed into its wanted position, it still looks pretty good already! I am sure that Dirk will wire the rest of the tree in the next couple of day’s to bring out the best out off that top!

3-10-2013 Dirk's worshop 035 Hans van Meer 800

Dirk left close to 10 in the evening with a nice and almost finished good looking Bonsai and a big smile on his face! Next Spring we will meet again in my garden for another “Bonsai Fun Day” with lots of coffee! I can’t wait to work with my friend Dirk again!

Hope you enjoyed this little story?!

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.

MY DEMO AT THE SHO RYU KAI BONSAI CLUB.

Hi, everybody,

on the 8th of September, I gave a demo at SHO RYU KAI BONSAI CLUB that’s is situated in the famous LODDER Bonsai centre in Harmelen (The Netherlands). Marcel Witteman a member of this club took pictures of it all and he gave me kind permission to use them so that I could share them with you all! It was a short afternoon demo, so I was a bit pressured for time (as often with demo’s), but I got some kind wiring help from Filip Haesen (Belgium) that gave me some more room to explain and discus things with the club members!

5 NOR_0054 800

Below: This demo tree (from Filip Haesen) that I selected is a Chuhin sized Juniper Itoigawa from Japan. Some years ago it was used in another demo after which it lost a lot of branches, especially on one side! It recovered well and now it is healthy enough to undergo its second styling by me! This is one of two possible fronts.

1 NOR_0048 800

Below: Problem with choosing this side is that the first branch on the right side of the tree is placed almost at the top, so it can only be transformed into a literati Bonsai.

2 NOR_0049 800

Below: This is the other possible front.

3 NOR_0050 800

Below: Problem with choosing this side as a front is that there is a reverse taper at the base of the tree.

4 NOR_0051 800

Below: Having a long look while discussing all the possibilities with the students.

6 NOR_0056 800

7 NOR_0057 800

8 NOR_0061 800

Below: After we decided to go with the second possible frond side (with the reverse taper), I removed all unwanted foliage and death stuff.

10 NOR_0070 800

Below: Than with the help of a hard copper brush I carefully removed all the dry bark from the recently died sections, making sure not to damage the live veins. A cutback branch and an old dead one were converted in too short Jins. In this picture, you can clearly see that there are no branches growing from this side!

11 NOR_0076 800

Below: After initial cleaning. Green arrow: Look how nice that newly formed live vain craws upwards the trunk. Red arrow: Here a section of deadwood needs to be removed so that the trunk will look thinner and more in balance with the bottom section of the trunk!

12 NOR_0077 800

Below: Removing unwanted wood, while styling what stays. It is done with the purpose to reduce the visual thickness of the deadwood, but also to envisage the beauty of it. In other words: It has to look good! 🙂 The green arrow point at an uncovered recently died section.

14 NOR_0089 800

Below: Stil styling the deadwood while Filip Haesen is wiring along.

15 NOR_0091 800

                                                     Below: Almost finished.

16 NOR_0093 800

                                               Below: Applying the last wire.

13 NOR_0084 800

Below: The red line shows just how snake like the bottom section of the trunk coils upwards! The red arrow points at the only thicker branch of the tree. It is pretty straight so it needs bending to give it more movement. It will be the main character branch in this design.

17 NOR_0096 800

Below: Bringing the foliage off the bottom branch into place. It is divided into two main layers.

18 NOR_0098 800

Below: Slowly bringing layer after layer into its new place. In this picture, you can clearly see that with this side as the front the branch with the red arrow would be the first main branch. The only way to style with a first branch that high would be a tall Literati with not much foliage and a strange trunk. The green arrow shows at the only lower branch on the tree. It is useless with this as a front because it grows straight to the back. A windswept would not look right either with this trunk, in mine and the majority’s opinion! 🙂

19 NOR_0100 800

Below: Bringing everything into its place, without match planes or thoughts! I love this bit, exciting and always a bit affright or maybe, anxious?! It makes me happy! 🙂

20 NOR_0104 800

Below: The final resold. It’s a basic styling with not much harm or risk to the tree, so I am sure that in the good care of Filip this tree will recover just fine this time! It will be a nice Bonsai in just a few years time when more foliage has grown and more details/layers have been formed by Filip!

21 NOR_0106 800

Below: The end result, for now! But the start is there! I had fun and Filip, the owner, was happy and the club members were happy! So I am happy! Yes a fun day indeed, thanks to the SHO RYU KAI BONSAI CLUB for having me, let’s do it again!? 🙂

22 NOR_0109 800

I hope you all enjoyed this little photo story of a Sunday afternoon demo? 🙂

Cheers,

Hans.
