Happy New Year Every body !!!

Hi, everybody,

I know it is a bit late…..but I would still like to wish for all of you out there in Bonsai world a very happy and healthy 2015!!!!

I started this year with a lot of good intentions and resolutions! One off them: spending more time on my own trees, has already started and another one: feeling a bit better, started because I started with the first one! I miss working on my own trees! Sound funny, yes?! But it isn’t…really! On with the good news now: My dear friend Tony Tickle surprisingly invited me again as a teacher for the next edition of “BURRS 2015”. This “X” anniversary edition will be staged on 18 and 19 April instead on the usual weekend in November and there are still some places available (see poster)! I will be working together with my good friend Enrico Savini from Italy and the “Man” Tony Tickle and Terry Foster again! There are still some places left so if you are interested in an amazing weekend full of Bonsai fun….well!!

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.

Some info about the Bonsai course for beginners I did at Bonsai Club “Rijmond”.

Hi, everybody,

It’s been a while, I know…Bonsai at home came to a grinding hold for months now! Life came in between, like it sometimes does! But Bonsai work for or with others was more than ever, figures, doesn’t it?! 😉 Workshops, demo’s and my Summer course for Bonsai beginners, organized by the Bonsai Club “Rijmond” in a perfect location with plenty room to work on the future Bonsai! This 6 Sunday’s day’s course, with 14 day’s intervals, will be repeated next season! So when you are interested to join us, there is a contact address at the end of this post! Here is the post about our little club from their club magazine that i would like to show you all to give a impression of the classes, even though it is written in Dutch!

Hallo allemaal,

Hi, everybody,

early on the 17th of May, after a very warm 1,5-hour drive, I arrived in Edigem (Belgium) for my demo at this year’s Bonsai show from the (Antwerp section) of the “Vlaamse Bonsai Vereniging”. I had brought along a Yamadori Pinus Silvestris that I had prepared partly at home so that I would have time enough to finish it at this demo! Two thick branches needed to be bend severely so the time-consuming applying of wet rafia to protect the branches was already don at home to save time! I also had prepared a large wooden board to hold the whole pot and tree into it’s new forward tilted position during the demo!

Even though it was a very warm day there were still a lot of visitors in the large hall where the event was staged!

WORKING WITH MY FRIEND MATEJ.

***

Hi, everybody,

last Saturday it was early up for me to pick up my Slovenian friend Matej Planinc from the train station in Rotterdam. He is based on his work in Belgium and misses his trees and working on them so I invited him to work on mines together with me and he was all for that! 🙂 We watched and discussed my collection from under need a large umbrella because it sadly was raining cats and Sint Bernard’s dogs, like it, would do for the rest of that day, so we had to bring the tree we would work on inside the house! After discussing the trees on offer for work Matej choose to work on my old Japanese white pine. So indoor it was brought and with some extra lights on it, we first started to remove the older needles from it. After this task was done we started to wire the many, many branches! We only stopped for toilets breaks, coffee and Lunch to finish up around 7 o’clock with a nice meal before I brought a tired but happy Matej back to the train again! We already made new plans for next month to do it all again! 🙂

PICTURES FROM MY HAWTHORNS IN FULL BLOOM.

***

Hi, everybody,

I made some pictures of two of my Hawthorns now they were still showing there lovely flowers! But only just, with every little shake it started to snow a little so I had to be careful! The first one is from my old little Hawthorn in its new smaller Dan Barton pot. I always loved the former combo with the beautiful Horst Heinzlreiter pot that I won in a online styling competition, especially when it was in bloom! But it was a bit to heavy and overpowering during the leafless winter period. During the last repotting I found out that it easily fitted in to the slightly smaller and shallower Dan Barton pot, so that was a no brainier! Now the tree is more equal to the pot and looks much bigger, taller and further away than before! Dan Barton gave me this stunning pot as a surprise gift the last time I stayed in his warm house so I am glad that I found the right tree for his beautiful pot, I hope Dansai likes it as much as I do?! 😉

Hawthorn in bloom Hans van Meer org 500

This rare “Dutch” Hawthorn Yamadori that I collected some were in early 2000 close to where I live near the beach had some difficult to solve problems, like no branches on the lower part of its trunk and hardly any movement on the whole trunk! So I had to create a whole new top area out off new branches that had grown from a thick inverse tapered top stump. This is the drawing that I made for it back in 2005, it’s my take on a “Mother and Child” design! I all way’s wanted one so here was my change and challenge to create one!

11-7-2005 design Mother and Child Hawthorn Hans van Meer

Out off a branch that grew from the right bottom section I created a small leaning tree, like a little child that clings on to his towering mother seeking protection from the storm! How poetic! 🙂 It even has it’s little arm around her legs! This way I created some things of interest on and around an otherwise boringly empty and straight trunk line! The straight (like a stick) natural deadwood section along most of the trunk line was shaped with use of a concave cutter. I managed to create the illusion of movement by just removing and breaking off the hard deadwood. Now the trunk has some flow to it and is interesting to look at.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzrrrrrrrrz8888888 082 Hans van Meer 500

The yellow line better shows the movement of bark and trunk. No more straight section!

november, 2005 virtual Hans van Meer 500

And in the present time! The basic shape is already there, now it needs more branch structure to fill out the silhouette. It never had this many flowers and looks and smell great! It has lots of flows, but tons of character, in a year or 5 it will be ready to show (I hope)! 🙂

Something like this is what I see! A fantasy Bonsai?! 😉

A OTHER FUN BONSAI DAY IN THE SUN!

***

Hi, everybody,

last week I had my good Bonsai friend from Germany Dirk Mundorf in my garden for yet a other day of Bonsai fun in the sun (again!). This time he would help me working on my own trees. We worked on a Juniper, cutting off old wire and cleaned the bark and the deadwood. And in the meanwhile I explained about how and when to work on them and how to do it. We prepared a old needle Juniper to go home with Dirk so that he could take care of it. And then he wired and styled “Mae West” the little Hawthorn of mine that he fell in love with a long time ago and is from now his and under his future care! She turned out pretty nice and we were both proud about the out come!

Here are some pictures of that great Bonsai fun day in the sun!

MY WORKSHOP AT THE SLOVENIAN BONSAI CLUB.

***

Hi, everybody,

on the 26th of April, I gave my second workshop at the Slovenian Bonsai Club. This trip was organized by my dear friends Roland Petek and Janoz and I owe them a lot of thanks! 😉 We luckily had amazing weather so we were able to stage it outside so that we could work on our tan as well as on the trees! 🙂 The venue was perfect and the dinner they served at lunchtime was very enjoyable as well! So it turned out to be an amazing day with smiles all around and some amazing (pre) Bonsai as a resold! It is good to see that the level of the students, as well as the material, is rising so fast in this club, something that they should be really proud of! Here are some images of the trees and the students to give an impression of that wonderful day among friends!

First, each and every tree was discussed for all who were there. This is a great learning moment for all, I included because everybody can share their views about the styling and ask, or answer, to the point questions about how to reach that final stage in a bonsai live! I believe that styling advice should also consist proper techniques, aftercare and maintenance…..and a drawing of course! 😉

Janoz promising Mugo Pine and the drawing that I made as a reference.

My way of praying! 😉 Here I am explaining about how a tree like this could improve by opening it more up to the base section, with open arms, like it’s inviting you to a hug. That makes it more impressive and over towering , if that is a word?! By seeing sections of the lower trunk we get a better feeling of just how big this tree (appears) to be and from that, we can calculate from just how far away we are seeing it. All that instant info that gives us, the viewer, the feeling that we are actually looking at a, not too far away, real sized massive tree! All that info by just opening up the lower part of the trunk and the first branches. Bonsai is also being proud of your branch structure! It takes many extra years, but the end result is always better! But that’s just my opinion! 😉

Restyling my big Larch named the Elephant.

Hi, everybody,
last weekend it was lovely weather so I decided that it was time to rewire and restyle my big Larch named the Elephant! I am still recovering from two minor operations so I could not stand up for too long and so I had to work in short sessions, but who is complaining with such weather and such a tree to work on?! Last year the tree was allowed to grow freely and most of the smaller ramification had grown out off position and needed to brought back into place again!
Below: Before the work started! Just look at that tangled mess of branches!

24-3-2014 Larix (Elephant) 081 Hans van Meer 500

Below: And this is how my Elephant looked after 3 days of on and off wiring!

25-3-2014 larix (elephant) 055 Hans van Meer 500

I had to redesign most off the top section because I was not satisfied with how it had progressed over the last couple of years! It looks much better now, but it still needs a lot of work in the future years to make it the way I see it in my mind! But the tree and I are not going anywhere, so I just enjoy the ride as the years go by! Gives me time to find a suitable pot for the Elephant to live in!

Hope you like what I have done so far?!
Cheers,
Hans van Meer.
