HI EVERYBODY!!!

Hi, everybody,

don’t worry, I am still among the living! 🙂 This is why it has been a while since I posted anything on my blog.

A few weeks after I posted about the death of two of my most precious Pines, all bonsai artists blog’s that were in the care of the AoB forum disappeared completely! I and others tried for weeks on end to get an explanation from them about what was wrong, through all the possible channels. But just until last week there was a small mail telling me that there had been problems with the data whatchamacallit and that all was in working order again! Well as you and I can see, it isn’t alright at all! All pictures are disappeared from all the blogs! I have tried to get any info about where they are and if they can be salvaged and placed back. But Just like before, there is no answer whatsoever to any of my questions! SIGH!! It is not even possible to post any pictures anymore!

Even if I could find all these missing pictures back among the thousands that I have, going through them all again and then replacing them all here would cost me months! And I am pretty sure that all the drawings and virtuals I made over the years are gone for sure! So I guess that this is the end of my blog. Losing all this info from all my work over the last years that I shared with you all is another crushing blow to me. And it wasn’t a very good year, to begin with! In the last weeks, I have been posting some stuff that I have been doing on the IBC forum. But the amount of work that I have done over this past year has been very little. After my second back operation, it took a while to recover, but there was slight progress in the right direction. Until 4 weeks ago when I tried to swim in the sea, that was calling for so long during those warm days! The next day the pains came back revengeful and it has gone from bad to worse from then! So, I am really disappointed and down at this moment, because the new plans I was starting to make again are out of the window again! But I will keep on doing what I love to do the most, so you will hear soon from me some were, somehow!

Stay safe and thanks for your support and interest in my work for all these years!

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.

WHEN YOUR ART DIES ON YOU….

Hi, everybody,

it’s been a while, I am sorry, But I just did not have the heart to post any sooner!

I had a lot of recovering to do after my second back operation, so that took most of my energy. But what was really tough to do during these last months, was that I had to slowly watch my two favourite Pines die!

These ancient trees that I worked so successfully on for so many years. That was only just a few years away from being shown for the first time.

For the first time, after all these years of stubborn working on these time-consuming yamadori,  I would have been able to show my best work after almost a decade of loving care!

This year marks my twenties year in Bonsai and as I wrote earlier at the beginning of this year, I had to reset my goals in Bonsai because of my back problems. But I had some almost-finished Bonsai to bring to its peak to keep me happily busy for the next couple of years! Well, they died!

Bellow: One of them was well over 600 years old! When I bought him, he had no roots at all. With a lot of care, I saved him from certain death and turned it into a happy and healthy tree again. Then to helplessly have to watch something that old and wonderful die, to be honest, that was really devastating!

12-7-2010 004 Hans van Meer web

Bellow: Anyone that visits my website and reads my stories about “THE SWAN”, knows just how precious this unique hollow old Pine was to me! I honestly believe that the world lost a very special tree and future Bonsai!

12-7-2010 006 Hans van Meer web

Where to go from here with pursuing this art form, I honestly don’t know? I don’t have the opportunity anymore to collect and I  am certainly not able to afford yamadori this precious again! And even if  I could, there are no others like these two! I have a lot of thinking and soul-searching to do!

Bellow: Even in death my swan is mind-blowing. So sad!

Thanks for listening again, my friends! And thanks for all your warm replies! It is highly appreciated!

Hans van Meer.

UPDATE ON HOW “THE ELEPHANT” LOOKS.

Hi, everybody,
via this way, I would like to thank everybody for all the well wishes that I received! It’s now two and a half weeks since my second back operation and so far things are going as planned. Now I can only wait and hope that this operation will really help to solve the nerves pain problems that I have been having for so long! But that might take a while, so I do what I can do, to fill my days. But being able to look at this tree every day, makes up for a lot!

This picture is shot a couple of days ago. And the lower branch, that was trimmed back a lot, is filling out nicely. I like the wilder and more mature image of “THE ELEPHANT”. I can’t wait to see it in a couple of years!

PICTURE OF MY RESTYLED LARCH “THE ELEPHANT”.

Hi, everybody,

I know that I told you all in my previous post, that the next day I would start to work on my Juniperus communis. Well, I started bright and early that next day! And all that I had to do before I could start to work, was to lift the tree from off its bench onto the working bench behind me. And that was the end of it! My back gave out and I had to abort any idea of doing anything else than lying down on the sofa all day again! That wasn’t a good start of the sunny day that I had waited for, for so long! But a few hours later that day my luck seems to have changed again when the assistant of my Neurosurgeon called me and asked me if I was able to come the next day for an intake check-up so that I could be operated this next Monday? I told her that I probably had to craw, but I would be there! 🙂

So I had my checkup last Friday and Tomorrow night I will check in to the hospital and I will be operated in the afternoon on Monday! I am really happy because this date is at least 6 weeks earlier than we had hoped for! And that is not a moment too soon for me, things have con from bad to worse the last month and I am fed up of it all. So I hope that this time the operation will bring some better result than the first one 6 months ago! Because I still want to run the New York marathon in 2011….NOT!! 🙂

Anyway, restyling “M” has to be postponed for a few weeks/ months later. But I did make some nice pictures from “THE ELEPHANT” with it’s brightly coloured new foliage just appearing. That I would like to share with you!

I restyled this old larch about two weeks ago and now with this short foliage, the image of it’s more mature appearance is really starting to show. I would have loved to make these shots a few days later when the foliage is just that bit longer, but I have an appointment for a back fix! 🙂 The story of this last restyling will be posted soon onto my website!

I know that this tree is far from finished! But I can see that it will be really special someday in the future! It would be nice if by then, I could lift it my self onto its table at its first show! In a nice custom made pot! Fingers crossed! 🙂 Hope you like the new image of “THE ELEPHANT”?

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.

IT’S ABOUTH TIME THAT I RESTYLED MY COMMUNIS, NAMED “M”!

Hi, everybody,

here are two pictures of  “M”, my Juniperus communis Yamadori that I collected in 2004 in Austria. In 2005 I gave it it’s first styling at the “JOY OF BONSAI” in Bath (UK). Because this species is so very hard to maintain healthily, I made sure that it had recovered and was strong, before last year I finally planted it in its present first pot. And now, a year later, it is safe to give it it’s second make over! So tomorrow I finally will start to do, what I have been dying to do for all those long years! 🙂

21-4-2010 040 Hans van Meer web

I think that this is my first pre Bonsai that really has two really good possible fronts! So who knows? I might decide to style it with just that, two fronts!

21-4-2010 062 Hans van Meer web

I love this tree so much!  It’s amazing twisting live vain and it lightning like Jin, all made by mother nature, are breathtaking! To be able to work on such a tree makes me very humble. This tree triggers my imagination to the fullest, so I can’t wait to start to work tomorrow! I will keep you all posted!

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.

BUXUS MICROPHYLLA IN FULL BLOOM.

Hi, everybody,

yesterday I made a picture of my “Buxus microphylla” in full bloom. Every evening during the last week, I have been bringing it inside the house for a few hours, where it stood as a centrepiece on the living room table. The intoxicating fragrance that this little Bonsai shared with us for free, is better than any perfume we could ever buy!

This is one of the first trees I ever bought and it must be in my care for more than 17 years now. It was one of those many unsightly stumps, with just a few small branches on top, that back in those days were imported by the hundreds from China. If you look at this picture, it is hard to believe that two years ago, I almost lost this little tree. It lost about half its foliage in one growing season! I am so glad that it is regaining its strength. I cant let you smell, but I can try to show you!

Hope you enjoy this messenger of a warm Summer?!

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.

MY VISIT TO “JOY OF BONSAI” 2010.

Hi, everybody,

here is an impression of my long weekend at the “JOY OF BONSAI 2010” event and the two-day demo I did in the beautiful town of Bath ( U.K).

Having missed out on so many events this past year, because of my worsening back problems, I wanted to make sure that I would make it to this lovely event. Because I hold so many great memories of my two earlier appearances, I even postponed my inevitable second back operation, just to be able to go again! I left my home early on Friday and after just a short one-hour flight I was picked up from the Bristol airport to be dropped off at Dan and Cecilia Barton’s house. And from the minute I walked into that door, until the moment that I walked out again on Monday, I was pampered in the most wonderful way that I had ever experienced! Ci, Jan and Mary T.  made my stay there feel like a long warm bath. I bow my head deeply in gratitude to these 3 gorgeous angels!

And what can I say about Dan Barton: well, I got to know him a lot better this weekend. As a great artist, potter and philosopher. But most of all I got to know his great sense of humour and his love of life! The long talk we had about the arts and life while sipping on his best whiskey, deep into the night, was a true highlight of this trip! The stories of his times with his great friend John Naka were all inspiring and soooo funny! In today’s bonsai world, where so many think they are God’s gift to Bonsai and where others are only in it to make a fast big buck, it is nice to know that there are still people out there like Dan Barton! He turned my nose in the right direction again!

Above: Just look at the ramification of this lovely Bonsai that Dan has been training for many years!

The event was staged again in the “Pavilion” in the old town of “Bath”. This is a beautiful old town that is heavily influenced by the “Romans”. There are endless beautiful buildings and places to see. So really early on the very sunny Sunday morning, before the second day of hard work would start there, I sneaked out to take some pictures with my new camera. The town was mostly still asleep, so it was a wonderful experience to walk true these old streets that hold so much history.

Above: This is the stunning Yamadori Juniper of the young talent from Belgium, Yannick Kiggen. This poor picture shows his Juniper after the first day of cleaning and partly wiring the tree. Sadly I have no pictures of the lovely end result he created, so I hope someone can email one to me! But anyway, this Yannick is a great guy, who is made of the right Bonsai material and a real promise of the European Bonsai scene. He made a great first impression!!

joy of bonsai 2010 041 Hans van Meer

Above: This close-up nicely shows Yannick’s knowledge of advanced Techniques and his braveness to use them to create his vision.  To make it possible to bend this branch and bring the foliage closer to the trunk, Yannick had to separate the deadwood (left part) from the life vein (right part).

Above: All the foliage grew on the opposite left side from where I needed it to be, the right side. To create my new top, I had to try and bend this pinkie-thick old branch to the right and upwards (green arrow). The problem was, that there was a Shari running along this branch, just at the point where I needed it to bend. So at the yellow arrow, I removed about half an inch of the deadwood and then I hollowed it out as much as was safe.

joy of bonsai 2010 117 Hans van Meer

Above: Then 3 layers of raffia and 1 layer of tape were tightly applied to protect the branch from breaking at that point.

HansYew_IMG_2565small Hans van Meer

Above: Cleaning the deadwood. Because this tree was a bid lose in its pot, I secured it as well as possible to the table. But even so, the cleaning work was kept to a minimum to prevent any damage to the roots!

joy of bonsai 2010 124 Hans van Meer

Above: It is not the best picture in the world, but it is the only one I got for now! After I finished the tree, it was brought to this stage, where I was able to tell the people what I had done and why! So on the way up on this. to the high table,  the lower-left branch was unfortunately pushed upward. The tree should be seen from higher up, more looking down on the foliage. And more turned to the right. But as long as you got the impression and idea of my styling, it’s good enough for me! 🙂

Hans'Yew_IMG_2556small Hans van Meer

Above: And here is a much better one. Thanks, Mark and Rita for mailing them to me!

The movement and deadwood on this old Yew are truly amazing. I tried to style the foliage in such a way that it would highlight these lines. Keep in mind the story that this battered cascading Yew is telling to us all! This pre-bonsai will look lovely in a couple of years. Thanks, Terry for the chance to work on this wonderful tree! I hope you like the result of my work?

So here ends my impression of yet another great “JOY OF BONSAI” event! Although it was sometimes hard, I would not have missed it for the world! ABBA and all its volunteers staged a truly inspiring show! And I am proud that I was able to play my little part in it!

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.

A SMALL HAWTHORN, TWO YEARS LATER.

Hi, everybody,

two years ago I posted HERE the story of a small “Hawthorn” that I had collected in Nov. 2006 in Wales.

Below: And this is how the small “Hawthorn” of this post looked in February 2008 before the work started.

februari-2008-127-hans-van-meer.jpg

Below: February 2008. And this is how it looked after the first styling was finished.

februari 2008 352 Hans van Meer

During the last week, I removed the old wire from last year. Worked on branch refinement, which means: cutting off all the ugly or to straight or thick small branches. Then all the branches were wired again and brought into position.

Below: 13-2-2010. And this is the picture of the finished restyling. Present height of the tree is 28cm/11.2 inch. Remember that between the above picture and the one below, only two years have passed! I find that amazing! “Hawthorn’s” are truly wonderful trees to work with!

12-2-2010 104 Hans van Meer web

Below: A bird’s eye view of the tree. Look at all those branches.

12-2-2010 119 Hans van Meer web

I know it will need some more years for the branches to mature and the top to thicken some more. But I think this small “Hawthorn” is well on it’s way to becoming a very powerful Bonsai!

I hope you like it so far?!

Cheers,

Hans van Meer.
